Adjustment to Change & Life Transitions

It may be helpful or necessary to seek counseling when enduring a life transition to ease adjustment, work through related emotions, and increase social and occupational functioning. Common transitions include but are not limited to:

  • Changing jobs
  • Moving
  • Divorce
  • Getting married
  • Unemployment
  • Birth of a child
  • Unexpected or unplanned pregnancy

Difficulties adjusting to change can be acute (lasting less than 6 months) or chronic (lasting more than 6 months).

Treatment for issues of adjustment vary based on the individual and the life event they experience, but engaging in counseling is an effective way to work through distressing feelings, change cognitions, find new patterns of behavior, and develop new coping skills. Counseling can also provide empathy, understanding and healthy social support.
